This is a description of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), an analytical chemistry technique used to separate and analyze complex mixtures. The process involves two main components: an ultra-high performance liquid chromatograph (UHPLC) and a mass spectrometer. The UHPLC is used to separate organic compounds in the mixture before they enter the mass spectrometer, which has high separation power and can separate ions with a mass-per-charge (m/z) value to the fourth decimal place. The components in the mixture are ionized using techniques such as electrospray ionization (ESI) or atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI), and then measured by the mass spectrometer. In cases where samples are highly pure, they can be directly injected into the mass spectrometer.
