Science-backed! 9 benefits of CBD oil

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a naturally occurring chemical compound found in both hemp and cannabis plants, although it is more abundant in hemp. When consumed or applied topically, CBD interacts with receptors in the endocannabinoid system, which plays a role in regulating various bodily functions such as movement, emotions, homeostasis, and the immune system. CBD can help send signals between cells and help support the body’s natural processes.

CBD is commonly extracted from the hemp plant in the form of oil. This oil is often mixed with a carrier oil, such as coconut oil or hemp seed oil, for consumption. Recent studies show that 60% of U.S. adults have reported using CBD, with 55% of them specifically using CBD oils and tinctures, according to a recent survey conducted by OnePoll for Forbes Health. This indicates a growing trend of CBD usage in the U.S. market, as more people become aware of its potential health benefits.

Here are nine scientifically-supported benefits of CBD oil.

1.) Reduce anxiety and depression
CBD has been found to effectively reduce anxiety levels. A 2017 study published in the Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry examined the anxiety levels of 57 men during a public speaking test. Participants who received 300 milligrams of CBD experienced a significant reduction in anxiety during the test compared to those who received a control pill without CBD. Interestingly, those who received 150 milligrams or 600 milligrams of CBD had more anxiety during the test than the 300 milligrams group.

Furthermore, research suggests that CBD may have similar effects to antidepressants such as imipramine in stimulating antidepressant reactions in the body, potentially alleviating symptoms of depression. However, further studies are needed to fully understand the effectiveness of CBD for depression.

2.) Epilepsy relief
CBD has been found to be effective in treating seizures caused by epilepsy. In 2018, the FDA approved the use of CBD under the brand name Epidiolex to treat seizures caused by Lennox-Gastaut and Dravet syndrome, which are two rare forms of epilepsy that affect patients at least 2 years old. The FDA based its decision on three well-reviewed studies involving 516 patients with these syndromes. In the trials, participants were administered either Epidiolex or a control pill that did not contain CBD. When Epidiolex was taken in combination with other prescription drugs, it significantly reduced the frequency of seizures in participants compared to the control group.

3.) Alleviating Symptoms of PTSD
CBD has shown potential in helping patients with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In a small 2018 study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, 11 patients with PTSD were given CBD in addition to their usual psychiatric care for eight weeks in an outpatient psychiatric clinic. Ten out of the 11 participants experienced a decrease in PTSD symptoms. Researchers suggest that CBD can be a beneficial treatment option for PTSD patients. Margaret Rajnic, a paramedic with experience in medical marijuana and CBD, emphasizes the importance of using any therapy in conjunction with cannabis or CBD for PTSD. Another human trial conducted from 2012-2016 found that CBD was effective in reducing symptoms of PTSD. Some trials included THC, the psychoactive compound in cannabis, but taking THC and CBD together in equal amounts can reduce the psychoactive effects of THC, while small amounts of THC combined with higher amounts of CBD can enhance CBD’s effectiveness.

4.) Address Opioid Dependence
CBD has shown potential in treating opioid addiction, with several animal and human clinical trials suggesting its effectiveness. Studies have found that CBD can alleviate psychiatric and medical symptoms, such as anxiety, insomnia, and pain, in people with substance use disorders. Moreover, CBD has been found to reduce cravings in heroin users, anxiety symptoms during withdrawal, and physiological markers such as resting heart rate and salivary cortisol levels. These findings suggest that CBD may be a viable treatment option for opioid dependence, although more research is needed to confirm its use. It’s important to note that CBD should not be used as a substitute for consulting a physician or healthcare professional before use.

5.) Relieves ALS Symptoms
CBD and THC, when used in combination, may provide benefits for people with ALS. ALS is a progressive disease that causes the degeneration of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to loss of muscle control over time. While the exact cause of ALS is not fully understood, it can be inherited in some cases. Currently, there is no known cure for ALS, and only two drugs are FDA-approved to treat its symptoms. In a 2019 study, patients with ALS were given combination doses of THC and CBD tailored to their individual needs and symptom severity. Patients with mild, moderate, or severe spasticity (muscle stiffness and rigidity) reported reduced symptoms after using CBD. Those with moderate to severe spasticity reported higher satisfaction rates than those with mild spasticity.

6.) Alleviates Unmanageable Pain
CBD has shown potential in treating chronic pain. In 2005, Canada approved the use of Sativex, an oral spray containing CBD and THC, for the treatment of multiple sclerosis-related pain. It was later approved for cancer pain that was unresponsive to other drugs.

Ongoing studies in the United States also indicate that CBD may be effective in treating chronic non-cancer pain. A 2020 study gave CBD to a group of patients with peripheral neuropathy and compared them to a group receiving a placebo. The results showed a significant reduction in severe pain and itching in the group using topical CBD compared to the placebo group. No adverse side effects were reported. When applied topically, CBD oil does not appear to cause systemic problems and may have a more pronounced effect.

7.) Alleviate Complications From Diabetes
Research has shown that CBD may have potential benefits for people with diabetes. In tests on human cells, CBD has been found to reduce the effects of high glucose levels on other cells in the body, which can contribute to the development of diabetes and its complications. Further studies are needed to determine the full extent of CBD’s benefits for people with diabetes.

A small study involving 13 patients with type 2 diabetes who were not on insulin treatment found that CBD reduced levels of resistin, a protein that regulates glucose levels and causes insulin resistance, while increasing levels of insulin-dependent glucose peptides, a hormone that allows adequate release of insulin from digested food. These results suggest that CBD may be a natural diabetes treatment by helping the body regulate insulin-related hormone levels and potentially alleviate complications associated with diabetes, such as the accumulation of plaque in artery walls. More research is needed to confirm these findings and determine the optimal use of CBD for diabetes management.

8.)Potentail Neuroprotective Effects of CBD
CBD has been found to possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties through clinical and preclinical studies. which could offer neuroprotection and protection against various neurological disorders.

Studies suggest that CBD may have a beneficial effect on Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and multiple sclerosis, based on preclinical research. Although studies on Huntington’s disease and ischemic stroke showed no significant positive effect, further clinical studies are necessary to determine the benefits of CBD as a treatment for these neurological disorders.

9.)Alleviates Arthritis Symptoms
Arthritis is a condition characterized by the deterioration of tissues in and around the joints, causing pain, stiffness, and limited mobility. Treatment for arthritis often aims to reduce pain and improve joint function.

In a 2006 study, Sativex, a CBD-based botanical drug approved in the UK in 2010, was found to improve sleep quality, pain during movement, and pain at rest in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The study involved 58 patients, and the results showed statistically significant improvements compared to placebo. CBD has been found to have a pain-relieving effect as well as the ability to suppress disease activity.

In 2018, a study using a synthetic CBD gel applied topically was conducted on patients with knee pain due to osteoarthritis. The daily dose was either 250 mg or 500 mg, or a placebo. Patients were asked to stop taking other anti-inflammatory or analgesic drugs, except acetaminophen, before and during the study period.

The results were not entirely conclusive, but they are interesting. Patients treated with CBD did not experience a significant change in pain compared to those who received the placebo. However, there were statistically significant differences between the 250 mg group and the placebo group when measuring their weekly average worst pain and physical function scores on the WOMAC (Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index). It was also observed that men seemed to benefit from CBD more than women in this study.

While it is true that there are benefits to using CBD oil, it is important to note that not all CBD oils are the same in terms of quality and effectiveness. It is recommended to purchase from a reputable source that implements rigorous quality control measures. The manufacturer should be properly licensed and follow a standard production process, with modern laboratories to measure quality.
